Program Overview

The Journey Toward Costly Solidarity is a three-month formation experience designed to help key stakeholders at First Presbyterian Church grow as faithful neighbors who participate in God's work of peace and repair throughout Spokane.

Through biblical reflection, historical learning, guided encounters, and shared dialogue, participants will be invited to deepen their understanding of how Jesus calls us beyond charity and toward relationships marked by humility, mutuality, and costly solidarity. Throughout the journey, participants will learn alongside Indigenous, Black, and immigrant and refugee leaders and organizations who have generously accepted an invitation to share their wisdom, experiences, and hopes for our city.

Throughout this journey, we recognize that no community is monolithic and no single voice represents an entire people. We come as guests rather than experts, learners rather than saviors, seeking relationships marked by mutuality, respect, and gratitude. We are grateful for the generosity of local leaders and organizations who choose to share their wisdom with us, and we commit to honoring both their time and their trust.

Rather than seeking simple answers or quick solutions, this journey invites participants to cultivate the posture, practices, and relationships necessary to contribute to the flourishing of our shared community.
