SHIFT_jrhi Student Ministries

The Orange Times Parent Newsletter, Winter 2012

Welcome! SHIFT_jrhi is a place where middle school students from all corners of Spokane have a ridiculous amount of fun, grow in their faith, and live out justice in our world in the name of Jesus Christ. In general, SHIFT_jrhi meets on Tuesday evenings (7-9pm, FPC north entrance) and Sunday mornings (10-11am, Westminister Room downstairs). If you're a 7th or 8th grader, SHIFT is the place for you and your friends.  Print out our Winter 2012 Calendar and join in the goodness.

What We're About

Our ministry is relational in nature. Shift is about meeting students where they are in a highly transitional period of life, and building relationships that allow students to explore a life with Christ. It is sharing life together: the ups, the downs, the all of it.  Our leaders are not volunteers who show up for a weekly event. They truly invest in students' lives and seek to live out the gospel alongside students.

What this means for parents is that you have a partner in mentoring your early teen! It also means your student will be contacted often by an adult leader (college or older) in a variety of appropriate ways. Your student's healthy experience is our top priority. We do background checks, leader training, and link guy leaders with guys and girls with girls. Always feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns about leaders, programs, or ministry philosophy.

Current Content Series: Hold on.

At SHIFT, we’re always going through a series of “content”—the substantive, faith-focused stuff we talk about and experience at our events. This winter (January through March), we’re beginning a Tuesday night series called Hold On. In addition to just learning who Jesus is and saying we believe in Him, we’re exploring how we can “hold on” for so much more—a true relationship that helps us trust Him with every part of our lives.

Shift into Action

Led by our CORE team of 8th grade student leaders, SHIFT_jrhi is always translating our beliefs to real action. From our Urban Plunge trip in San Francisco (mid July) to our massive 30-Hour Famine fundraising and fasting event (early March), we empower students to live out the mission of Christ to change the world around them and give glory to God. Between these big events, you'll find SHIFT students serving meals at the City Gate homeless ministry, offering childcare at women's shelters, creating an 80 percent off Christmas Toy Store, and serving local families at childhood cancer events.
