Ministry Information

Anuak Justice Council
The Anuak Justice Council actively promotes and safeguards the security, human rights, and just treatment of the Anuak people around the world, particularly in the Gambella region of Ethiopia and southern Sudan, and also protects and preserves Anuak culture.

 


Anuak Meer Ministry

This ministry is the designated Anuak ministry of First Presbyterian Church and provides support for widows and orphans in the Gambella region of Ethiopia in the aftermath of the massacres of the Anuak tribe, which began in December, 2003. This ministry works in partnership with Ethiopia Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, founded by Ethiopian Presbyterian missionaries. Contact: Carolyn Holmes

 


Camp Spalding and Clearwater Lodge

Camp Spalding is a ministry that seeks to expand and deepen God's kingdom through camp and conference ministry, in a place for Christian groups to conduct camps, retreats, and high-impact summer camps and weekend adult and family conferences, with the goal to help youth and adults to come to know Jesus Christ and develop a stronger relationship with Him.

 


Centro De Promocion De Salud E

Provides basic health services and health education to a large neighborhood area including the residents of the city dump in Tijuana, Mexico.

 


Christ Clinic

A non-profit medical clinic that provides quality care to low income people who have limited or no medical insurance. The clinic's goal is to serve God and demonstrate the love of Christ through the practice of medicine.

 


Christ Kitchen
A Christ-centered, nondenominational ministry providing work, job-training, discipleship, support, and fellowship for women living in poverty in the Spokane area. Through the production and sales of gourmet dried food products, this ministry enables women to learn to work, to become employable, and, eventually to support themselves and their families without reliance on government programs or destructive relationships.

 


Christian Community Development Conference

The mission of CCDA is to inspire and train Christians who seek to bear witness to the Kingdom of God by reclaiming and restoring under-resourced communities. The goals of the CCDA are:
To strengthen existing Christian community development organizations.
To encourage new Christian community development efforts.
To promote Christian community development through regional training.
To educate and mobilize the body of Christ at large to become involved in Christian community development in their area.
To sustain, enable and inspire those individuals doing Christian community development.

In 1989, Dr. Perkins called together a group of Christian leaders from across America who were bonded by one significant commitment, expressing the love of Christ in America's poor communities, not at arms length, but at the grassroots level. An association was formed, and CCDA held its first annual conference in Chicago in 1989. Each year since, Christians from throughout the United States, including from First Presbyterian Church of Spokane, have met to work toward improving under-resourced communities.

 


Spokane City Forum

The vision of Spokane City Forum (SCF) is to inspire, through the presentation of impressive speakers, new efforts in making the greater community of Spokane a better place to live and work with opportunities for all. SCF, a community service of First Presbyterian Church, utilizes a lunch venue for hundreds of Spokane residents to hear from well-known speakers on topics that elevate communities. City Gate

City Gate's ministry works to reclaim, rebuild, and restore the lost and broken lives of the people of the inner-city of Spokane, through the use of food and clothing banks, counseling, low-income housing, shower and laundry availability, and drop-in daytime fellowship.

 


Cup of Cool Water

The Cup of Cool Water ministry proves the love and hope of Jesus by developing healthy relationships and providing services via outreach programs, drop-in programs, off the streets safe haven, food, and fellowship to all those in need.

 


Doug Baker, Northern Ireland Ministry

We are individual PCUSA missionaries. Our mission statement is that of the PCUSA, as spelled out through various documents of the World Mission unit. The focus of present ministry is to promote various reconciliation efforts in Ireland as a witness to God's purpose of uniting all things in Christ (Ephesians 1.) Our goals for 2008: 1. To deepen understanding within the Irish churches of the biblical basis for peacebuilding as an integral component of discipleship. 2. To support the Gospel in Conflict initiative of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and the Hard Gospel initiative of the Church of Ireland with study resources, training and tools that will sustain their emphasis within the respective denominations beyond the current 3 year funding for full-time staff. 3. Strengthen ties between PCUSA and the Church of Scotland and the United Reformed Church (Eng. and Wales) through visits scheduled for early 2008. 4. Encourage more awareness of the Young Adult Volunteer Program across PCUSA and support and extend placement of YAVS in Northern Ireland.

 


En Christo

En Christo is an organization of Whitworth College students "responding to God's call to form relationship with the homeless and impoverished of downtown Spokane, provides 250-300 lunches every Saturday to people living in downtown hotels. Through prayer and fellowship, relationships are formed.

 

First Presbyterian Church Pre-School and Kindergarten Scholarships

 

Hogar Madre Teresa Orphanage
This small orphanage in the poorest section of Tijuana is staffed by volunteer nurses who provide basic health care to families in extreme poverty.

 


Itapagipe Church and Community Center, Brazil

The Community Center of Itapagipe's ministry in a poor area of the city of Salvador, Brazil, is the act of demonstrating solidarity, compassion, and love for the poor and the disinherited, the unemployed, and the illiterate of Brazil. "We preach and celebrate the sacraments, and also turn that message in a practical way in daily living. We do this by teaching young people, by allowing them to attend school and finish high school, and second by providing dental care to the poor children and adults in this region." Japanese Evangelical Missionary Society

Michael and Chris Mason live and preach in Sakai, Japan. Their mission is to help both Japanese and foreigners to become genuine lovers of God and fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Their church was founded in 1987 by a Japanese pastor, and they assumed the leadership since 1997. They have responsibilities for preaching, leading worship, church administration, discipleship, evangelism, teaching English, and providing leadership in the church.

 


Junior High Ministry

Krista Foundation

The Krista Foundation encourages and supports young adults engaged in sustained volunteer service in three areas:
1. America's inner-cities
2. Developing nations
3. Environmental stewardship

The Krista Foundation for Global Citizenship was inspired by the life and vision of Krista Hunt Ausland, who was killed at 25 while volunteering with her husband, Aaron, in community development in rural Bolivia. Believing that one's twenties offer an ideal time to practice the ethic of service, her family, friends, and colleagues want to continue Krista's desire to "show God's love in actions" by providing encouragement and grant support to other young adults who choose a journey of service.

 


Latah Creek Church Development

This new Presbyterian Church is being built in the Latah Valley, southwest of Spokane along the Pullman Highway because "new churches" are more effective at reaching unchurched people in the newer developments. This church has the support of the Hamblen Park, Manito, and First Presbyterian Churches.

 


Liberty Park Child Development

Liberty Park Child Development Center is a Christian outreach of the Presbytery of the Inland Northwest serving children and families in the community through quality education, child care and family services.

 


Life Services

Life Services provides comprehensive quality education, social and health services to parents and children. Services include preschool education for four-year-olds (ECEAP hours: 9 - 11:30 a.m. & 12:30 - 3 p.m.). Child care coordinates with the ECEAP program to provide full-day child care services. Life Services also has a Christian preschool program, an after school program for school-aged children from Grant School and a summer day camp program. Some bilingual services are also available. Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sliding fee scale; ECEAP free, accepts DSHS payment.

 


Living Stones of Ibillin

Living Stones of Ibillin (a chapter of the national organization Pilgrims of Ibillin) is sponsoring multiple activities promoting better understanding and peace in the Middle East. Living Stones of Ibillin is dedicated to supporting organizations and individuals committed to achieving peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among Christians, Jews and Muslims. A better understanding of what our Palestinian brothers and sisters in Christ are dealing with on a daily basis is key. Living Stones focuses primarily on education; we support programs and institutions where young people are given outstanding opportunities to study and grow as well rounded leaders and develop viable job skills. First Presbyterian has developed a strong relationship with Fr. Elias Chacour’s Mar Elias Educational Institutions in the Galilee area of Israel. The multiple schools spans K -12 and University level training. Mar Elias is open to all faiths and grounded in a commitment to peacemaking and reconciliation.

 


Martin Luther King Center

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Outreach Center is a non-profit, community based social service center located in East Central Spokane, one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Spokane County.
In the framework of Dr. King's vision of equal respect, treatment and accessibility for all people, the MLK Center has provided culturally responsive education, enrichment and social services for children and families in Spokane since 1970.

 


Mid-City Concerns

Mid-City Concerns consists of two major programs: Meals on wheels and Mid-City Senior Center. Meals on Wheels serves the homebound and elderly and disabled residents in the Spokane city and county. Contact with these people is as important as the food that is brought. The Senior Center serves the highest-risk, lowest income seniors in Spokane by providing a safe haven in Spokane as well as hot breakfasts and lunches. Plus the staff provides activities, resource and referral advocacy-based services, health screenings, and education to the seniors.

 


Ministry of Presence

This is a ministry whose mission is to improve the low-income neighborhoods of Spokane through on-site relationship building with tangible assistance to those needing food and shelter and fellowship.

 


Mission Community Outreach Center

The Mission Community Outreach Center is a charitable, non-profit, all volunteer organization whose services are free to all low-income families and individuals. These services Include Infant Crisis Bank and assistance for victims of domestic violence. This outreach center serves over 6000 families per year, including over 3500 infants, gives relief to the poor and distressed or the under-privileged and works toward eliminating prejudice and discrimination.

 


Northwest Intervarsity Christian Fellowship

The purpose of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship is to establish and advance at colleges and universities witnessing communities of students and faculty who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord, Growing in love of God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture, and God's purposes in the world.

 


Orphanage at Prachakittisuk, Thailand

This ministry serves the orphans whose parents died with HIV/AIDs and the poor of Thailand. In Rev. Dr. Sirirat's words, "We thank God to welcome the orphans from HIV/AIDs that have no one to care for them. We have an orphanage for them and send them to school, clothe them, and welcome them into the life of Christ. The orphans need Christ. We have 109 orphans whose parents died with HIV/AIDs and 16 orphans got HIV positive. We are family of God." Contact: Rev. Dr. Sirirat Pusurinkham (Pastor).

 

 


Orphanage of Bogata, Colombia

This ministry is a Christian based orphanage for young girls ages 4 to 7, at risk of being drawn into prostitution. The orphanage is specifically aimed at taking in girls who have been, or are at risk of being forced into the sex trade. who may have parents (but abusive home-life) or don’t have parents (were killed in the civil war). Understanding that Jesus’ call to the church is to serve, this ministry and church in Bogota, Colombia desires to be a real testimony to this calling by helping those most vulnerable to physical and/or sexual abuse. Rebuilding Together Spokane
Rebuilding is a national non-profit agency with affiliates throughout the United States. It is the largest volunteer home rehabilitation organization in America with work taking place in 770 cities. The mission of Rebuilding is to partner with our community to rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly, disabled, and families with children in order that they may continue to live in warmth, safety, and independence. Spokane Rebuilding will rehabilitate at least 7 low-income homes in Spokane County in 2006. Contact: Sean Sanders

 


Seminary Students

First Presbyterian Church provides financial support to a small number of students who have ties with FPC who are now attending seminary school.

 


Senior High Ministry

The Senior High Ministry is a very popular youth ministry centered at FPC, involving high school aged youth from many of the areas other churches, and includes activities throughout the year, highlighted by the annual Easter home-building Project in Mexico and the Westport Vacation Bible School. Other Christ-based activities include: Worship Underground (WU) is a worship experience for high school students that meets every other week. Students participate in its leadership. WU focuses on music, Bible Study, prayer and community.
Senior High OutReach (SHOR) is a faster paced fun night which focuses on building a family of relationships with each other and discovering how a relationship with Jesus Christ works. SHOR meets every other week.
Family Groups meet on SHOR nights. Each student that comes to SHOR night will be placed in a family group with other s from their school. These are community based small groups with focus on growing closer to each other as we grow closer to God.
D-Groups are high commitment single sex Bible study groups. Their purpose is for the members of the group to help each other grow in their understanding and faith in Christ and apply it to their daily life.

 


Shalom Ministries

The Shalom Ministry is a meal ministry, serving over 3000 meals per month with the potential for more, plus plans for providing transitional housing. Contact: Curt Shoemaker

 


Various Short Term Mission Projects

Various short term missions (several weeks to several months) are also supported by FPC through the Ministry Team.

 


Heart for Ministry - Whitworth Student Scholarships
Our church provides financial aid to specific Whitworth students who have strong connections with FPC. Grantees are active members of the church, often assisting with student ministries. Whitworth adds $500 to our $1000 per student, and students are eligible to receive these scholarships for more than one year.

Wycliffe
The Wycliffe Ministry serves Bible-less peoples around the world through partnering with educational organizations, non-governmental organizations, national and regional church and interdenominational bodies. This work encompasses scripture translation and use, as well as research, technological development for complex writing systems, ,basic health and development literature, and basic education. Young Life

Young Life is a non-denominational outreach ministry committed to reaching adolescent youth with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Young Life leaders are caring Christian adults, from a diversity of church backgrounds, who work in teams to walk alongside adolescents, offering friendship and support, and seeking to share the Gospel of Christ in a relational way. Youth for Christ

Spokane Area Youth for Christ serves young people and families in West Central Spokane through City Life Club and small groups, a neighborhood ministry house, and many informal interactions with the neighbors. City Life Club, Parenting Workshops, and summer camps are part of this ministry's mission also.
