Jubilee International Marketplace

November 14, 2009   9:00 am - 4:00 pm

One in five people in the world—more than 1 billion altogether—attempt to live on less than $1 a day. This sobering fact, juxtaposed with the relative extravagance of our lives, requires a response from those who claim to be followers of Jesus. But what can we do to effect change and be builders of hope?

Twenty years ago a group of friends at FPC with a common goal of working for justice joined together to create the Jubilee International Marketplace to help bridge the gap between our lives and those in great need in other parts of the world. Supported by the efforts of more than one hundred volunteers, over the years more than a third of a million dollars of beautiful, handmade products have been sold. Fair Trade organizations such as Ten Thousand Villages and local vendors who work directly with groups of artisans in places as diverse as Guatemala, Nepal, Thailand, Ethiopia and Chile are represented at the marketplace.

Jubilee provides an opportunity for our church family, in a spirit of thankfulness, to work together in a multi-generational effort to raise awareness of justice through fair wages for artisans. The artisans’ skills demonstrate the beauty and diversity of God’s creation, and artisans' families and communities benefit directly from the fair prices received for their products.

The next Jubilee sale is scheduled for Friday, November 13, 2009 from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Come celebrate Fair Trade with us!
